Limited Prints for Maïté’s Premier Series “Altered Familiar”

Covered in the armored scales of an alligator, this bear explores the ways protection is developed through experience. Unlike markings that exist for display or recognition, an alligator's skin serves a practical purpose. It is a product of adaptation, shaped by the demands of survival.
By combining this protective exterior with the familiar form of a teddy bear, the work examines how individuals are changed by the environments they move through. Every challenge, disappointment, and hardship leaves an impression, gradually influencing how we navigate the world and respond to it.
Thick Skin reflects the tension between vulnerability and endurance. It considers how the qualities developed through survival can become so deeply ingrained that they begin to shape identity itself. The work asks where adaptation ends and authenticity begins, and whether the things that protect us ultimately become part of who we are.

The Altered Familiar
Maïté’s new series, The Altered Familiar, explores the transformation of a universally cherished icon: the teddy bear. In this series, Maïté Côté merges hyper-realism with whimsical surrealism, reimagining these childhood symbols with traits of other animals. Each painting invites viewers to see beyond the familiar, uncovering layered identities that blur the lines between comfort and wildness, from bears with leopard fur to those cloaked in snake scales.
